Traditional Cuisines from Wayanad

Travelling is an adventure that is incomplete without food. When you recollect an earlier vacation, you remember not just the scenic vistas but also the flavour of the cuisine. The memories of the location may fade with time, but the taste of that unforgettable meal will remain with you.

The culture and traditions of a location can be seen in the food. Kerala, the “Land of Spices,” is one of India’s most culturally diverse states.

Wayanad is well-known for offering a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian culinary alternatives to its visitors. Due to its proximity to the shore, it also provides a wide variety of seafood options.

Here are some cuisine items to look out for while visiting and exploring Wayanad.

Sadhya:

It is a traditional Kerala cuisine served on a banana leaf. Traditionally served at festive occasions like Onam, Vishu, weddings, and the like, the sadhya, on average, consists of 20-25 dishes. The sadhya rules the table when it comes to great vegetarian Malayali food. There is a sequence in which dishes are served, and there is a position for each dish on the banana leaf. You will be amazed to see how teeny weeny portions of each dish will be presented to you on the banana leaf. Inji Pulli, Maanga Achaar, Narangya Achaar, Ulli Theeyal (butter onion vegetable), Kootu curry (made of Bengal gram), Eriserry (made of pumpkin), Chauli (black-eyed peas), Moru Curry (made with Lady’s finger and buttermilk), and the Avial are the names of some of the dishes. Kheer and bananas are also served as a part of Sadhya. For a vegetarian, this will prove an absolute delight!

It is prepared by cocooning the kingfish in a masala with coconut milk as its base and spicing it quite gently to retain its warmth. You will like the crunch of the coconut flakes in the masala.

Prawan Curry Meal:

The fresh prawns are cooked with the head, which is where the flavour pop is! A nice touch is given with the drumsticks in the curry. You may enjoy the crunch of the beans poriyal, the bitter gourd, the fish pickle, and the red chili chutney with a touch of sweetness.

Pidhi Kozhi Porichathu:

A juicy bird, despite its scrawny size, served with a mutta (egg). The fried curry leaves make for a toasty relish. The signature dish here is loved for the crunch masala, in which the chicken is covered before deep fried.
