What can be a better place to rejuvenate than mist-clad mountains in the monsoon? The refreshing rain drops redefine the greenery around and colours the hill stations of Kerala in perplexing beauty. The vast expanses of the Western Ghats stand proud with beautiful monsoon clouds in their backdrop. Even the thought of the aroma-laden winds of the spice plantations mixed with petrichor feels someone with a nostalgia never experienced before. One such hill station from God’s own country is Wayanad.
Wayanad is breathtakingly beautiful and has everything to satiate the wanderlust. There are mountains, lakes, waterfalls, caves, bird-watching sites, wildlife, protected tribes, vast expanses of tea, coffee, and spice plantations, and numerous trekking trails spread across the landscape. And its beauty intensifies with the onset of monsoons. The mountains become more mystical, the forests become more greener, and the place becomes more surreal. Monsoon is magical in the wild and wondrous Wayanad.
The rainy season transforms Banasura Sagar Dam into a beautiful sight. The dam is spread across a wide area and has crystal clear water. Peaceful and enveloped by the hills, Banasura Sagar Dam is an absolute beauty. It is an excellent place for a picnic as nature’s bounty surrounds it. Because of excessive rain, many small islands emerge in the dam’s reservoir during the monsoon.
Although going very near the waterfalls is not advisable during the monsoon, Wayanad’s waterfalls have view-point areas from which one can enjoy the magnificent falls cascading in full force. The charming waterfalls provide the perfect spot to relax and admire the true beauty of the weather and nature. Everything is more fresh and more green. The strong flow with soaring sounds adds extra beauty to the stunning scenery. But to reach the waterfalls, like Meenmutty, one has to do some trekking for a few kilometers.
It is another stunning dam from Wayanad and is considered India’s second largest earth dam. It is a delightful place for an unwinding day, with an incredible panoramic sky, peaceful breeze, and a waterfront. This reservoir in Karapuzha river, a small tributary of the Kabani River, has been formed by nearly a dozen lakes merged. The water advances the brim of the dam during monsoon season and offers a fantastic scene.
Protecting the diverse flora and fauna, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is the favorite of every nature and wildlife lover. Visitors can easily spot deers, elephants, leopards, tigers, wild dogs, exotic birds, and many other delicate ecosystem creatures enjoying rain drops under bushes or trees. Rain refreshes the forest breeze, the grasslands get a new life, and trees look magnificent while dancing to the tune of the monsoon wind. The rustling sound of the wind across the deep forest makes the whole place more enchanted.
Pookode Lake is a must-visit during the monsoon. It’s less populated, the surrounding is green, and the view is fantastic. The lake presents splendid greenery and panoramic scenes that will leave you mesmerized. It is a natural freshwater lake significantly close to the city center. Visitors can spend quality time with their friends, families, or partners. The walking pathways are adorned with green foliage at the sides and have colorful butterflies wandering over the cute little flowers. Everything is wet, fresh, and beautiful. The lake gets its name from Pethia Pookodensis, a freshwater fish found only in this lake.
All seasons’ favorite, the peak becomes as enchanted as some magical places described in fairy tales. There are mists all around, and the air can never be fresher. Lush green grasslands and evergreen forests make the whole trail picturesque. Mountain mists envelop you throughout the journey, and words fail short of describing the view. However, you will need a special permit for the trek, and we would advise you to have a guide and wear comfortable shoes to have safe trekking.
If you love hills and mountains, especially those swaddled in mist, you must visit Wayanad during the monsoon. A stay at a beautiful resort adds more meaning to the whole experience. Don’t wonder about what to do when it rains. Just imagine yourself sitting on the balcony overlooking the beautiful Neelgiri biosphere, sipping your warm cup of coffee, and enjoying the croaking of frogs, chirping of birds, and the pitter-patter of rain drops.
